Two recent Wall Street Journal articles present sharply different interpretations of AI’s labor impact. Which one comes closer to how you feel about employment prospects in the coming AI revolution?

I call the first perspective “AI’s Office Purge”. It is looking at the micro-level, what is happening in offices right now.

The second is the “We’ll Adapt View”. It looks at the macro-level, how economies behave over decades.

Of course, we all have to live in the here-and-now.

At the end of the day, these two views show us that we’re heading deeper into a ‘K-shaped’ economy. On one hand, the math says the sky isn’t falling. But on the other hand, anyone sitting in a corporate office right now can see the water is rising.

It’s a classic case of the ‘macro’ being cold comfort for the ‘micro.’ We aren’t necessarily witnessing a ‘job apocalypse’ where work disappears forever; but we are witnessing a massive, painful ‘re-shuffling.’

The world still needs workers, but CEOs are sending out a lot of pink slips. History says we’ll adapt, but history usually forgets to mention how much the transition hurts while you’re in it.
