Precision, Style, & Tone are Too Hard to Get Right in AI Responses
Here is a Complete, Ready-to-Use, Safe, Customizable, and Repeatable Fix
The other day I wrote about the AI Fritter Feud between ChatGPT and Gemini (How ChatGPT and Gemini Helped Me Make Better Zucchini Fritters ) and how:
Gemini was right: ChatGPT did not have warmth and cuddles in its writing style and tone.
Now I realize that ChatGPT’s cold analytical tone in the fritter feud was my fault.
I had forgotten that, in project instructions, I told it to always prioritize professionalism, objectivity, precision, and evidence. It followed those instructions exactly in its recipe.
The problem was that the precision, tone, & style that works for me in AI-assisted analytical tasks works poorly as an AI invitation to dinner.
The lightbulb lit up for me: I need a better workflow to generate AI responses with the precision, style, and tone that fit the task and the audience.
Why Precision, Style, & Tone are So Hard to Get Right in AI:
Three things were colliding in my own workflow.
My preferences change. I want style and tone to adjust for my mood (is it work-time or play-time?) and audience (just me? Workshop participants? Newsletter subscribers? Business owners?). Sometimes I need rigor. Sometimes I need warmth. A single fixed voice does not fit every task, artifact, or audience.
AI instructions are global. Once I optimize an AI for precision and objectivity, that posture bleeds into everything. It is not easy to override mid-session.
Style & Tone edits need to preserve response content. Most of the time, I want the same ideas to land better, without losing accuracy or important substance. Generic prompts like “revise this to make it friendlier” routinely fail at this.
Many writers already separate the substance of AI responses from the tone. The problem we often run into is that when AI is prompted to be more accurate or more cordial, the system will silently trade precision and friendliness off against each other. Writers have to worry that, when asking AI to improve how something reads, it quietly changes the meaning or overly summarizes and loses important information.
What we need is a solution that is explicit, enforceable, customizable, and repeatable.
How I Solve the Precision, Style, & Tone Problem:
I separate AI response substance from tone. What I mean by this is simple: first, I have the AI focus only on getting the facts and content right. Only after the substance is locked do I ask the AI to revise how the same content is expressed. For example, the style & tone could be described as expressing the persona of an Analyst or of a Dinner Host.
In this Post, I share with Paid Subscribers the exact system of pre-prompts I developed to control precision, style, and tone when generating AI responses. The system is explicit, repeatable, designed to prevent drift, safe, customizable, and immediately useful.
Paid subscribers get:
